The Creek House

Home of the Philpotts

The Creek House is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. The two-story, eight-room frame house now serves as a family retreat for Philpott Descendants Corporation members and their guests. Fourth and fifth generation Philpott cousins return throughout the year to celebrate family, enjoy holidays and reacquaint with their "roots".

Apr 3, 2009 / The Philpott Room

A fund drive has been underway for a couple of years to raise money to expand the Bassett Historical Center. How is this relevant to Philpott Descendents? Simple. The complete history of the Philpott family, since their arrival in Henry County (and reaching back to Maryland and England), is contained in the Bassett Historical Center, which is one of the premier genealogy and history resources in Virginia.

The performance of this facility (and its super staff) has resulted in almost unbelievable growth. Patrons from all 50 states and nine foreign countries continue to visit and use the resources of the Center to fill in gaps in family history and genealogy. With patronage now above 8,000 visitors a years, continuing gifts of family histories, demands for programs which teach local history and the intricacies of genealogy research, and the need for work rooms, meeting rooms and display space completely swamped existing facilities. The Historical Center is also an economic engine for Henry County. With so many visitors each year, our local businesses benefit when these visitors buy food, fuel, lodging and other necessary services during their visits.

The fund drive was launched to raise $780,000 in order to double the size of the existing Historical Center building, a 4,000 sq.ft. addition. Some $460,000 has been raised to date. Needless to say, this has been a struggle. The condition of local industries and the economy in general has created a very difficult challenge. We recently received a $200,000 matching grant from the Harvest Foundation. The rub is that by December, 2009, we must raise the $200,000 matching amount in order to receive the grant from Harvest. To date, approximately $60,000 has been received.

To boost the effectiveness of our efforts, we recently prepared and manned a booth at the Annual Trade Show in Martinsville, where we talked with numerous business leaders and other visitors. Rusty and Suzanne Lacey and Bill Martin were among those I talked with. Suzanne suggested that I inform the Philpott Descendents of our efforts and ask for assistance in the funding of a Philpott Room in the new area of the center. They understand the importance of this facility and the urgent need to proceed as fast as possible with the expansion program.

In summary, I am asking each of the Philpott Descendents to consider a gift towards our goal. A successful effort will result in prominent recognition of Philpott contributions to the program. If you can help, please send your donation to: Bassett Historical Center Building Fund, 3964 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, VA 24055. Mark your donation for The Philpott Room. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to honor the memories and history of the Philpotts of Henry County. Please help!!

Thanks and best wishes,
Bob Petty

Feb 16, 2009 / Message from Sherry

Thanks to everyone who attended Chucks funeral. I really appreciated it and I know Chuck was so appreciative of all your calls and cards. He battled his addictions and his subsequent illnesses with grace and dignity till the end. He tried so hard to take care of his family, including his step children and their families. All of Rhonda's children told me over and over again how much they loved him because he accepted them as his own and made many sacrifices for them. He had a heart of gold and family meant everything to him. I believe he is in the hands of God now and at peace. Thanks for everything. Could you do me a favor? A special thanks to those who contributed to Charlotte's college fund. She is without her Dad but she has allot of other family members who care about her.

Thanks to everyone.
Love, Sherry
